African lilies, also known as Agapanthus, can be propagated by division or by seed.
Division
Dig up the clump: In early spring, dig up the mature plant.
Wash the roots: Remove the soil from the roots.
Cut the clump: Use a sharp knife to divide the clump into smaller sections. Each section should include some roots, foliage, and new buds.
Replant: Replant the divisions at the same depth as the original plant.
Monitor: If the plant is in a pot, monitor it closely.
Seed
Extract the seeds: Remove the seeds from the pods.
Sow the seeds: Sow the seeds immediately.
When to propagate
Garden plants: Divide every 4–6 years.
Potted plants: Divide and repot every 4–5 years.
Deciduous plants: Divide in early spring.
Evergreen plants: Divide in autumn after blooming.
Why propagate
Division is a good way to expand your garden or share plants with friends.
Potted plants bloom better when root-bound.
