Ajuga, also known as bugleweed, can be propagated by division or from seeds

Division

  1. Dig up a clump of ajuga in early spring or fall
  2. Shake off as much soil as possible
  3. Gently pull or cut the clump apart into smaller sections
  4. Replant the individual sections in a new location
  5. Water thoroughly and keep the soil moist for the first month

Seeds

  1. Sow seeds indoors in early spring
  2. Move the seedlings to larger containers as they grow
  3. Transplant the seedlings to the garden in the summer

Cuttings

  1. Remove stolons, or plantlets, from the mother plant
  2. Root the stolons in a container or plug flat
  3. Mist the cuttings for the first week of propagation
  4. Transplant the cuttings when they are fully rooted

Ajuga is a low-growing groundcover that spreads quickly by underground runners called stolons. It grows best in moist, fertile soil in partial shade. Ajuga can become invasive, so you can prune, dig up, or pull runners to keep it under control.
