Black locust trees can be propagated by seed or by root cuttings

Seed propagation 

  1. Soak seeds in boiling water for 12–24 hours to break the thick coat
  2. Plant seeds in moist soil 1/2–3/4 in deep
  3. Cover with soil
  4. Water
  5. Protect from pests during the first few years

Root cutting propagation 

  1. Dig up roots at least thumb thickness
  2. Cut roots into 2 in sections
  3. Plant in a potting mix or prepared seed bed
  4. Keep in a warm place to encourage rooting and new shoots

Tips for propagating black locust 

  • Avoid planting in extremely heavy clay or soils with excessive water moisture
  • Protect from deer or other potential pests during the establishment period
  • Use an auger to plant in well-drained soil
  • Control grass competition
  • Prune trees
