Black locust trees can be propagated by seed or by root cuttings.
Seed propagation
- Soak seeds in boiling water for 12–24 hours to break the thick coat
- Plant seeds in moist soil 1/2–3/4 in deep
- Cover with soil

- Protect from pests during the first few years
Root cutting propagation
- Dig up roots at least thumb thickness
- Cut roots into 2 in sections
- Plant in a potting mix or prepared seed bed
- Keep in a warm place to encourage rooting and new shoots
