Blanket flowers can be propagated by seed, division, or cuttings.
By seed
- Collect seeds: In late summer or early fall, collect seeds from dry flower heads.
Store seeds: Place seeds in a paper bag and store in a cool, dry, dark place. Plant seeds: Sow seeds directly into the soil after the last frost. Lightly press the seeds into the soil and keep them moist.
By division
- Dig around the plant: In the spring or fall, dig around the plant and gently lift the root ball.
- Separate the plant: Tease the roots apart to separate the plant into two or three sections.
- Replant: Replant each section in its own location and water thoroughly.
By cuttings
- Take cuttings: In late winter to early spring, take root cuttings from a stem with at least one to two nodes.
- Treat the cutting: Clip the stem below the nodes and treat the cut end with rooting hormone.
- Plant the cutting: Stick the cutting into a sterile, moist rooting media and keep it moist for up to 3 to 4 weeks.
- Repot or transplant: When the cutting is rooted, re-pot or transplant it.
Blanket flowers prefer poor, well-draining soil. They can tolerate somewhat moist conditions, but heavy clay soil may kill them.
