Calla lilies can be propagated by dividing the rootstock, or rhizome, or by growing them from seed

Dividing the rhizome

  1. Dig up the plant: Use a shovel or pitchfork to dig up the plant.

Separate the rhizomes: Use a sharp knife to cut the rhizome into sections, making sure each section has at least one bud or roots.

Cure the cuts: Let the cuts dry out for a week.

Replant: Plant the rhizomes in a pot with well-draining soil or in a garden bed.

Water: Water sparingly until shoots appear, then water more frequently.

Provide light: Place the plant in a bright location with indirect light.

Avoid fertilizer: Don’t fertilize until the plant has settled in.

Growing from seed

  1. Plant the seeds in moist soil, making a small indentation.
  2. Provide light for germination.

Tips

Calla lilies grown from rhizomes flower faster than those grown from seed.

Not every propagation attempt will be successful, but each attempt can help you learn and improve your skills.  Maintain a clean environment and monitor water levels to increase your chances of success.
