Chrysanthemums can be propagated by dividing the plant or taking cuttings.
Dividing the plant
- Dig up the plant in early spring when new growth appears.
Use a sharp knife to divide the plant into sections. Each section should have a portion of the root system and several shoots. Replant the divisions in the garden or in pots.
Taking cuttings
- Take cuttings from the plant in late spring or early summer.
- Cut a 4–6 inch section from a strong shoot, below a leaf node.
- Remove the lower leaves, leaving one or two sets at the top.
- Pinch the bud at the tip to encourage more shoots.
- Dip the cutting in rooting hormone.
- Plant the cutting in potting soil.
- Water the cutting and wait for roots to grow.
- When roots appear, transplant the cutting to its own pot.
Caring for the cuttings
- Stake the cuttings for support.
- Water the cuttings regularly.
- Keep the soil well-drained.
- Cover the plants in winter if you live in a cold or wet climate.
