Chrysanthemums can be propagated by dividing the plant or taking cuttings

Dividing the plant

  1. Dig up the plant in early spring when new growth appears.

Use a sharp knife to divide the plant into sections.  Each section should have a portion of the root system and several shoots.  Replant the divisions in the garden or in pots.

Taking cuttings

  1. Take cuttings from the plant in late spring or early summer.
  2. Cut a 4–6 inch section from a strong shoot, below a leaf node.
  3. Remove the lower leaves, leaving one or two sets at the top.
  4. Pinch the bud at the tip to encourage more shoots.
  5. Dip the cutting in rooting hormone.
  6. Plant the cutting in potting soil.
  7. Water the cutting and wait for roots to grow.
  8. When roots appear, transplant the cutting to its own pot.

Caring for the cuttings

  • Stake the cuttings for support.
  • Water the cuttings regularly.
  • Keep the soil well-drained.
  • Cover the plants in winter if you live in a cold or wet climate.
