Clematis can be propagated by taking cuttings or layering.
Cuttings
Select a stem: In April or May, choose a healthy, flexible stem from the current season’s growth.
Cut the stem: Using sharp secateurs, cut the stem above a leaf joint, about 7 cm long. Avoid cutting the very tip of the stem.
Remove leaves: Remove some leaves from the cutting to reduce moisture loss.
Prepare the pot: Fill a pot with a mix of compost and grit.
Dip in rooting powder: Dip the base of the cutting in rooting powder and shake off excess.
Plant the cutting: Push the cutting into the pot so the leaf joint is level with the surface.
Cover the pot: Cover the pot with a clear plastic bag or place it in a propagator.
Water and place in a warm spot: Water the pot well and place it in a warm spot out of direct sunlight.
Check the cuttings: Check the cuttings every few days.
Pot up the cuttings: Once the cuttings have rooted, pot them up separately.
Plant in the ground: After about a year, the cuttings should be established enough to plant in the ground.
Layering
Select stems: In spring, identify flexible stems and lower them into the soil.
Make a cut: Use a sharp knife to make a small cut into the stem where it will touch the soil.
Sprout roots: The stem should sprout roots directly from the cut.
