Elephant ear plants can be propagated by dividing the tubers or by using stem cuttings

Dividing the tubers

Dig up the tubers: In the fall, after the growing season, dig up the tubers with a sharp shovel. Wear gloves to protect your hands from the sap.

Divide the tubers: Using a sharp, sterile knife, cut the tuber into sections, each with at least one growth node.

Air dry the tubers: Place the cut tubers on a tray or plate in a cool, dry place out of direct sun. Let the cuts dry and scab over for about a week.

Plant the tubers: In the spring, when the soil is at least 70°F, plant the tubers in pots with well-draining potting mix.

Water and care: Water the plants thoroughly, but don’t drown them. Provide bright, indirect light and fertilizer at least once a month during the growing season.

    Using stem cuttings

Select a healthy stem: Choose a stem with a robust appearance.

Cut the stem: Cut a 4-6 inch section of the stem just below a leaf node.

Place in water: Put the stem cutting in a glass of filtered or distilled water.

Plant the cutting: Plant the cutting in its own pot with fresh soil.
