Perennial geraniums can be propagated by taking stem cuttings or dividing the plant.
Stem cuttings
Select a stem: Choose a healthy stem with a growing tip.
Cut the stem: Use clean shears or scissors to cut the stem just above a leaf node.
Trim the leaves: Remove any lower leaves and flower buds, leaving only a few at the top.
Root the stem: You can root the stem in water or in soil.
In water: Place the stem in a jar of water, keeping the water fresh by changing it daily. After a few weeks, roots should develop.
In soil: Insert the stem into a pot of compost, making sure the cutting is just below a leaf node.
Place in a suitable location: Place the pot in a shady area with good drainage.
Dividing the plant
- Dig up the plant.
- Cut through the plant, separating it into clumps.
- Remove any dead or rotten parts.
- Replant the healthy clumps in the garden.
You can propagate geraniums at any time of year, but some recommend taking cuttings in early morning.
