Goat’s beard ((Aruncusdioicus)) can be propagated by dividing the plant or by sowing seeds.
Division
Water the plant thoroughly the day before dividing
Dig around the plant to expose the root system
Gently lift the plant out of the ground Use a sharp, sterile tool to cut the root ball into sections
Make sure each section has at least one growth point, also known as an “eye”
Replant the sections in well-drained soil, spacing them 2–3 feet apart
Sowing seeds
- Sow seeds in well-drained soil, barely covering them
- Maintain consistent moisture until germination
- Place in a warm seedbed
- Fresh seeds should germinate in 2–3 weeks
When to propagate
The best time to divide goat’s beard is in early spring or fall when the weather is cool.
Growing conditions
Goat’s beard prefers moist, well-drained soil with partial to full shade. It’s relatively low maintenance and can tolerate a variety of conditions.
