Hellebore plants can be propagated by division or by growing from seed.
Division
Dig up the entire clump of hellebore plants.
Use a sharp tool, like a shovel or bread knife, to cut the clump into sections. Replant each section immediately in a hole at the same level it was before. Water regularly until the new plants are well established. Remove any damaged leaves.
Seed
- Collect ripe seeds from the hellebore plant.
- Sow the seeds into modules or let them self-seed in the garden.
- Water the seedlings regularly.
Tips
The best time to divide hellebore plants is in early autumn or right after they flower in the spring.
It can take a couple of years for new plants to flower well. Some varieties of hellebore, like Helleborus argutifolius, H. foetidus, H. lividus, and H. × sternii, are not well-suited to division and should be grown from seed. Letting hellebore plants self-seed can create a variety of colors and flower shapes
