Hellebore plants can be propagated by division or by growing from seed

Division

Dig up the entire clump of hellebore plants.

Use a sharp tool, like a shovel or bread knife, to cut the clump into sections.  Replant each section immediately in a hole at the same level it was before.  Water regularly until the new plants are well established.  Remove any damaged leaves.

Seed

  1. Collect ripe seeds from the hellebore plant.
  2. Sow the seeds into modules or let them self-seed in the garden.
  3. Water the seedlings regularly.

Tips

The best time to divide hellebore plants is in early autumn or right after they flower in the spring.

It can take a couple of years for new plants to flower well.  Some varieties of hellebore, like Helleborus argutifolius, H. foetidus, H. lividus, and H. × sternii, are not well-suited to division and should be grown from seed.  Letting hellebore plants self-seed can create a variety of colors and flower shapes
