You can propagate Iris cristata, also known as the Dwarf Crested Iris, by dividing the rhizomes or planting seeds.
Dividing the rhizomes
Choose the right time Divide the rhizomes in early spring or late summer. You can also divide them in early fall when the leaves start to turn yellow.
Prepare the soil Use a well-draining soil mix.
Separate the rhizomes Carefully separate the rhizomes, making sure each division has at least one growing point.
Replant the rhizomes Replant the rhizomes at the same level, about six inches apart. Water well.
Planting seeds
- Treat the seeds: Cold treatment may be needed for the seeds.
- Sow the seeds: Sow the seeds in a well-draining mix.
Additional tips
Fertilize sparingly.
Prune the plant after flowering to remove dead or damaged foliage and spent flower stalks.
Repot the plant every 2-3 years or when it outgrows its container. Wear gloves and other protective equipment when handling the plant.
