Lily of the valley can be propagated by dividing the rhizomes, or roots, in the spring or fall. This process creates new plants and rejuvenates older ones.
Steps
- Dig up the root clump with a shovel.
- Gently separate the rhizomes into individual sections.
- Remove any damaged or diseased rhizomes.
- Replant the sections in a shady location.
- Water thoroughly and continue to water until the plants are established.
When to divide
Spring: Divide the rhizomes when the plant breaks through the soil.
Fall: Divide the rhizomes after the growing season but before the ground freezes.
How to plant
Place the divided sections 6 inches to 2 feet apart and at least 1/2-inch deep.
Water the divisions when planting and consistently while establishing.
Why divide
Dividing the rhizomes prevents the plant from becoming overcrowded and unhealthy.
It also helps protect the older flowers.
