Malva can be propagated by seed or by cuttings.
From seed
- Collect seeds from the plant after it flowers.
- Sow the seeds in a well-draining potting mix.
- Cover the seeds with a light layer of soil.
- Water gently and keep the soil moist.
- Place in a warm, sunny location.
- After 1-2 weeks, the seeds should germinate.
- Transplant the seedlings into individual pots or into the garden.
From cuttings
- Select a healthy, non-flowering stem that’s 4-6 inches long.
- Using sharp, clean shears or scissors, cut just below a leaf node.
- Remove the lower leaves, leaving 2-3 pairs at the top.
- Dip the cut end in rooting hormone powder or gel to encourage root growth.
- Plant the cutting in a pot with a well-draining potting mix.
- Water thoroughly.
- Cover the pot with a plastic bag or humidity dome to create a humid environment.
- Place in a bright, indirect location.
- After 4-6 weeks, roots should form.
- Transplant the cuttings into individual pots and harden them off before planting outdoors.
