Pachysandra can be propagated by division or by taking cuttings.
Division
- Water the pachysandra well in the spring
- Dig up a clump of pachysandra with a sharp shovel or spade
- Cut the clump into sections with a sharp knife or spade
- Make sure each section has roots and shoots
- Replant the sections about 12 inches apart
- Water well and keep the soil moist for the first two months
Cuttings
- Select a healthy stem with leafy growth
- Cut a 3–6 inch piece below the leaves with sharp shears
- Dip the cut end in rooting hormone
- Insert the cutting into a pot with a moist potting mix
- Place the pot in a bright but sheltered location
- Keep the soil moist until roots form
- Transplant the cutting to a shaded garden bed or landscape spot
Pachysandra is a ground cover that spreads by rhizomes, which are underground stems that produce roots and shoots. It can be used in shaded areas, on slopes, and around the bases of trees.
