Poppies can be propagated by seed or by root cuttings

By seed

  1. After poppies bloom in spring, let the seed pods dry on the plant.
  2. Clip the dry pods and put them in a paper bag.
  3. Store the bag in a cool, dry place over the summer.
  4. In the fall, sow the seeds in a sunny flower bed.
  5. Water the seeds daily.
  6. After seedlings emerge, thin them out and water less frequently.
  7. The plants will grow over winter and bloom in spring.

By root cuttings

  1. When the plant is dormant, dig up the clump and gently separate it into sections.
  2. Each section should have some taproot, stem, and one or more eyes.
  3. Cut a healthy root section from the base of the plant.
  4. Sprinkle the root with a rooting hormone that contains fungicide.
  5. Press the root into a small pot with a sterile rooting medium.
  6. Place the pot in a cool, bright location.
  7. Water the cutting to keep the soil moist but not soggy.
  8. After about eight weeks, new sprouts should appear.
  9. Transplant the sprouts outdoors in the spring.
