Star of Bethlehem can be propagated by stem cuttings or by dividing the bulbs

Stem cuttings

  1. In early spring, select a healthy stem that is 4–6 inches long.
  2. Using sharp, sterilized scissors, make an angled cut just below a leaf node.
  3. Remove the lower leaves to reduce moisture loss.
  4. Dip the cut end in rooting hormone.
  5. Plant the cutting in a container with a well-draining potting mix.
  6. Keep the soil moist but not waterlogged.
  7. Place the container in a warm spot with indirect light.

Dividing the bulbs

  1. In the fall, when the plant is dormant, dig up the bulbs.
  2. Separate the bulblets from the main bulb.
  3. Replant the bulblets at the same depth as the parent bulb.
  4. Space the bulblets about 4 inches apart.

Additional tips

  • Star of Bethlehem grows best in full sun or partial shade.
  • Plant the bulbs in moist, well-drained soil.
  • Water regularly, but avoid waterlogging the bulbs.
  • Divide the bulbs every 3–5 years to prevent excessive competition.
  • After flowering, remove the dead flowers and foliage to allow the plant to store energy for the next growing season.
