Star of Bethlehem can be propagated by stem cuttings or by dividing the bulbs.
Stem cuttings
- In early spring, select a healthy stem that is 4–6 inches long.
- Using sharp, sterilized scissors, make an angled cut just below a leaf node.
- Remove the lower leaves to reduce moisture loss.
- Dip the cut end in rooting hormone.
- Plant the cutting in a container with a well-draining potting mix.
- Keep the soil moist but not waterlogged.
- Place the container in a warm spot with indirect light.
Dividing the bulbs
- In the fall, when the plant is dormant, dig up the bulbs.
- Separate the bulblets from the main bulb.
- Replant the bulblets at the same depth as the parent bulb.
- Space the bulblets about 4 inches apart.
Additional tips
- Star of Bethlehem grows best in full sun or partial shade.
- Plant the bulbs in moist, well-drained soil.
- Water regularly, but avoid waterlogging the bulbs.
- Divide the bulbs every 3–5 years to prevent excessive competition.
- After flowering, remove the dead flowers and foliage to allow the plant to store energy for the next growing season.
