Trumpet vine can be propagated by cuttings, layering, root division, or seeds

Cuttings

  1. In summer, use clean shears to take a cutting from a healthy vine.
  2. Remove leaves from the bottom half of the cutting.
  3. Dip the cutting in rooting hormone if desired.
  4. Plant the cutting in a container with potting soil.
  5. Keep the soil moist and the container in a shady area for at least a month.
  6. Dig up the shoots in late winter or early spring and plant them in a larger container or garden.

Layering

  1. Choose a flexible young stem and bend it down to the ground.
  2. Nick the stem with shears to encourage rooting.
  3. Gently pin the stem into the soil and water.
  4. Once roots are strong enough, cut the new plant from the parent and pot it up.

Root division

  1. Dig up suckers or shoots from the trumpet vine in late winter or early spring.
  2. Cut pieces of root that are about 3 to 4 inches long.
  3. Plant the root pieces just beneath the soil and keep them moist.
  4. New growth should appear within a few weeks or a month.

Seeds

  1. Sow seeds into seed compost in autumn.
  2. Place in a cold frame where the seeds should germinate in spring.
  3. It may take several years for the vine to flower.

For best results, keep the cuttings in a comfortable, climate-controlled room with consistent warmth and moderate humidity.
