White pine trees can be propagated by seed, cuttings, air layering, or grafting

Seed propagationĀ

  1. Collect large, dry cones from a mature white pine tree in late summer
  2. Shake the seeds out of the cone
  3. Plant the seeds in a shady spot in moist, well-drained soil
  4. Keep the soil moist, but avoid overwatering
  5. Wait for germination, which can take months
  6. Transplant the seedlings when they are 6ā€“12 inches tall

Cuttings propagationĀ

  1. Take cuttings from a white pine tree in late spring to early summer, or in early to mid-autumn
  2. Remove the lower leaves, leaving a few sets of needles at the top
  3. Apply rooting hormone to the cutting
  4. Plant the cutting in a well-draining, sterile soil mix
  5. Water regularly to keep the soil moist

Air layering propagationĀ

  1. Select a healthy branch that is at least one year old
  2. Make a cut around the branch, removing the bark for about 1 inch
  3. Apply rooting hormone to the exposed area
  4. Wrap the area with moist sphagnum moss and secure it with plastic wrap

Grafting propagationĀ

  1. Perform a top graft in late winter
