White pine trees can be propagated by seed, cuttings, air layering, or grafting.
Seed propagationĀ
- Collect large, dry cones from a mature white pine tree in late summer
- Shake the seeds out of the cone
- Plant the seeds in a shady spot in moist, well-drained soil
- Keep the soil moist, but avoid overwatering
- Wait for germination, which can take months
- Transplant the seedlings when they are 6ā12 inches tall
Cuttings propagationĀ
- Take cuttings from a white pine tree in late spring to early summer, or in early to mid-autumn
- Remove the lower leaves, leaving a few sets of needles at the top
- Apply rooting hormone to the cutting
- Plant the cutting in a well-draining, sterile soil mix
- Water regularly to keep the soil moist
Air layering propagationĀ
- Select a healthy branch that is at least one year old
- Make a cut around the branch, removing the bark for about 1 inch
- Apply rooting hormone to the exposed area
- Wrap the area with moist sphagnum moss and secure it with plastic wrap
Grafting propagationĀ
- Perform a top graft in late winter
