You can propagate yew by taking cuttings or planting seeds

Propagating by cuttings

  1. Take 4–6 inch cuttings from new growth in late summer or early fall
  2. Remove the lower leaves
  3. Dip the cuttings in rooting hormone
  4. Place the cuttings in a pot with a well-draining mix, such as equal parts peat moss and perlite
  5. Keep the soil moist but not waterlogged
  6. Place the cuttings in indirect light
  7. Wait for the cuttings to take root, which can take several weeks
  8. Once rooted, fill pots with potting soil and transplant the cuttings

Propagating by seeds

  1. Mix the seeds with damp peat or sand
  2. Keep the mixture at about 68°F for 4–6 months, then at 34°F for 1 month
  3. Plant the seeds outdoors and wait for germination in 1–2 years

Tips for propagating yew

Take plenty of cuttings to increase your chance that at least one will survive

Protect the cuttings in a cold frame over winter  Monitor moisture levels closely to avoid root rot
